the main goal of this project was to make piano arrangements that were relatively transparent to the original source material, while still being interesting to learn and enjoyable to play. piano transcriptions have a tendency to force the hands to do bizarre things in order to maintain the melodic lines and texture of whatever complex source they’re working with. so i’m trying my best to avoid that while hopefully using the strengths of the instrument to enhance or pull something out of the original.
with this tune i felt there was an opportunity to make some connections to pieces like chopin op 10 no 3 by bringing it down to the mid register as opposed to playing it higher up to sound like a music box. notes i wrote to myself in the score were things like “frolicking” and “with warm tone”; there is something nostalgic, dreamlike, and innocent about the tune. like love. i’m actually quite proud of how the accompaniment came together though i’m sure it sounds straightforward. it fits the hands well.
